It only took us 13 years to make a decent beer. Long before Mothercity Liquor was Mothercity Liquor, there was Mothercity Brewing. The original dream was simple: brew beer. We brewed at home constantly, registered the business and genuinely thought that one day we'd have our own little brewery. There was only one problem.Our beer wasn't very good.

That didn't stop us from trying. Over the years there were more attempts, more recipes and more questionable batches. Eventually Mothercity Brewing took a slightly unexpected detour and became Mothercity Liquor, and the little brewing dream was pushed to the side while we got on with selling beer made by people who were considerably better at it.

Thirteen years later, we've finally come full circle. For Polar Express, we teamed up with the brilliant crew at Afro Caribbean Brewing Company at Banana Jam and, for once, put the actual brewing in the hands of people who know what they're doing. Polar Express is a 6,4% Passion Fruit Cold IPA brewed to be crisp, dry and seriously refreshing, with Simcoe, Nelson and Superdelic hops bringing bright tropical fruit, citrus and juicy hop character.

A touch of passion fruit extract pushes all of that fruitiness a little further without turning the beer into fruit juice, while a clean, dry finish and45 IBUs keep everything firmly in IPA territory. It's punchy. It's fresh. It's hoppy. It's ridiculously drinkable. And most importantly:It's actually good.

One batch. That's it. We made roughly 500 cans and a few kegs of Polar Express, and we have absolutely no intention of turning this into some endlessly reproduced core range beer. This is a moment in time. One recipe. One brew. One canning run. When it's gone, it's gone. Partly because we love the idea of making beers that exist for a moment and then disappear.

And partly because after 13 years of trying to make a good beer, we're not tempting fate. So yes, Polar Express is a Passion Fruit Cold IPA. But for us, it's also something a little more sentimental. It's a beer from the company Mothercity was originally supposed to become, made by the company Mothercity actually became.

Mothercity Brewing finally made a beer we're proud to put our name on. We just needed 13 years and some professional help.
